Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions in the production of basement membrane components in the gut.
The production and deposition of extracellular matrix proteins and the cellular origin of type-IV collagen have been analysed immunocytochemically in cocultured or transplanted intestinal epithelial-mesenchymal cell associations. In the first experimental model, rat intestinal endodermal cells were cultured on top of confluent mono-layers of rat intestinal or skin fibroblastic cells. Under thes...
متن کاملThe Fine Structure of the Basement Membrane in Epidermal Tumors
Epidermal tumors were induced in Swiss female mice by a topical application of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene solution followed by repeated applications of croton oil solutions. Fourteen benign and malignant tumors were sampled 25 weeks after the treatment had begun, fixed in osmium tetroxide or potassium permanganate, and embedded in Epon. Sections stained with lead hydroxide were examined. ...
متن کاملEpidermal cells adhere preferentially to type IV (basement membrane) collagen
Epidermal cells from adult guinea pig skin attach and differentiate preferentially on substrates of type IV (basement membrane) collagen, compared to those of types I--III collagen. In contrast, guinea pig dermal fibroblasts attach equally well to all four collagen substrates. Fibronectin mediates the attachment of fibroblasts but not of epidermal cells to collagen.
متن کاملAmino Carbonylation of Epidermal Basement Membrane Inhibits Epidermal Cell Function and Is Suppressed by Methylparaben
This study investigated the effect of amino carbonylation (Maillard reaction) on the function of the epidermal basement membrane (BM) by analyzing epidermal cell proliferation and keratinization and stratum corneum barrier function using a three-dimensional human epidermal BM model treated with glyceraldehyde. Intracellular ATP levels were lower in cells cultured on amino-carbonylated epidermal...
متن کاملBasement membrane.
Basement membrane has attracted less attention than the other components of connective tissue. But, like the other extracellular fibres and matrix materials, it can profoundly influence both the structure and function of advanced life forms. Usually taking the shape of thin, structureless cementing material between epithelial and connective tissue, basement membranes are widely distributed thro...
